This is one of those tracks that you cannot stop listening to. It has catchy vocal samples, along with a smooth, but powerful bassline and more that comes in as the song progresses. What impresses me most about this New Orleans prodigy is that he is only 18! His “Capital” EP is being released soon, so be sure to grab one of your own!
5-Piece Cambridge locals Passion Pit are back in the studio, and have released this fresh track. They have not said if it will be on the new album or not, but they have said that the album will likely be released in Spring of 2011. Listen to the track here, and watch out for the new record!

So I’ve decided that for every week of 2011, I will be reintroducing an album from 2010 that stood out, but didn’t make the year end lists. First up is the full length LP “Ring” from LA native Cameron Mesirow. After receiving acclaim for her Apply EP in 2009, this release was not disappointing in the least. Its filled with soft, layered synths, simple but interesting drum tracks, and all topped with her hypnotizing voice. Check out the track “Mirrorage” below, and grab the album if you like!
jj has released this fresh mixtape today, which features an interesting mix between soft vocals, and hip hop rhythms. Pick up this mixtape for free from the link below, and make sure your christmas is a merry one!
Mogwai has announced their new LP “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will” with Sub Pop Records, and is set for release on February 15th. Here you can listen to one of the new tracks “How to Be a Werewolf”, which is a short, perfect example of what this band can do.
I dont know about any of you, but when I found the Fast Reverse EP by Bostons Orange Blossom Flyover, I was hooked. They have a very simple, yet very deep sound that fills your ears and keeps you hanging on until the end. Check out the single “Someone Like You” below, and grab the EP for free on their bandcamp page.

Continuing on catching up with a lot of good music this year, David Portner, better known as Avey Tare of Animal Collective released a solo full length titled “Down There” back on October 25th. It has certain elements of Animal Collective’s work but is spiced with some new sounds, and is of course topped with his hypnotizing voice. Give “Oliver Twist” a listen here, and be sure to buy this album if you like what you hear.
Cut Copy has announced a third full length for release on February 8, 2011. For a 3 piece, they have a really full, defined sound, and this album is looking to be their best yet. Check out this track “Take Me Over”, and be sure to get the album when its released!
Blood Diamonds is the producer Mike Tucker from Vancouver, British Columbia and he has recently release an EP with this track, as well as one titled Aries, which can also be found on his soundcloud page. With a large number of samples coming together to create these songs, it adds up to be a powerful delivery. I don’t know about all of you, but these songs are some of the catchiest I’ve heard in a while.
I haven’t heard much about this Pittsburgh group when i stumbled upon this album. I was still unable to find out much about the group, other than the fact that they define themselves as “future music”. Either way, these songs are all bursting with an experimental dream pop sound, which i personally cannot get enough of. The EP is available for $5 on their bandcamp.

Sufjan Stevens has added to his already amazing releases this year for the christmas season. After releasing a christmas EP every year for the past 5 years, he may or may not be doing one this season. Regardless, he recorded these songs for BBC radio, where he does a rendition of Silent Night, and later Ill be posting another song he created himself, which is a beautiful addition to the collection of Sufjan christmas songs.
Much like it was a great year in Indie/Electronic music, there were a lot of great releases in Hardcore/Metal/Punk etc. Again, these aren’t the best albums by any professional reviews, but these are my favourite releases this year. Especially with genres as broad as “Hardcore”, it is often hard to define what to look for in certain bands. All 10 albums featured here range from Pop Punk to Death Metal/Thrash, but they are all worth giving a good listen if you are into these genres at all.
10. NAILS - Unsilent Death
9. Ceremony - Rohnert Park
8. Four Year Strong - Enemy of the World
7. Daughters - Daughters
6. Trap Them - Filth Rations EP
5. Hour of the Wolf - Decompositions Vol. 1
4. Cower - Land Before Time
3. All Pigs Must Die - All Pigs Must Die
This 4-Piece from Massachusetts recorded and released this album this year, and even with other musical projects this group has a very strong sound that is present in these 5 songs. With the workings of Ben Koller (Converge) on drums, Kevin Baker (The Hope Conspiracy) on vocals, Adam Wentworth and Matt Woods (Bloodhorse) on strings, this group is bound for glory. This album is available through Shirts and Destroy or Deathwish inc, so pick it up if you haven’t already!
2. Baptists - Drown Your Sorrows
Baptists is a project formed by members of B.C. based bands A Textbook Tragedy and JAWS. Although this EP is only 4 songs, it is full of powerful rhythms, fast, technical guitar, and (as always) stellar drums to bring it all together. They are set to release a new EP early in 2011 on Southern Lord Records, which will most definitely not be a disappointment.
1. The Secret - Solve et Coagula
The Secret are a truly powerful blackened crust band from Italy, and after their first release “Disintoxication”, I knew that this band was bound for something great. They have amazing fast, technical guitar along with drums just as difficult, all topped with the powerful, grainy sound of their vocalist. This release is available through Southern Lord Records, and is worth every penny.
This was released just less than a week ago by Kanye West, and it features a large group of collaborative guests including CyHi Da Prynce, Teyana Taylor, Cam’Ron, Jim Jones, Pusha T, Big Sean & Musiq Soulchild. With this large group of artists, its a perfect christmas song for this season. Enjoy.
For the beet farm’s first post, I’m putting up my top albums of 2010. Now, this doesn’t mean that these are the best releases according to any professional reviewers, but they are the albums I enjoyed most this year. Many didn’t make it onto the list, but I’m confident that all of these albums will satisfy your ears like they did mine. 2010 was a great year in music, so here’s the list:
25. Adebisi Shank - This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank
24. Beach House - Teen Dream
23. The Roots - How I Got Over
22. Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles II

20. Junip - Fields
19. Cold War Kids - Behave Yourself EP/Singles
18. Twin Shadow - Forget

10. Fang Island - Fang Island
9. Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz
8. The Morning Benders - Big Echo
7. Delorean - Subiza
6. Emancipator - Safe in the Steep Cliffs
5. Blackbird Blackbird - Summer Heart
Blackbird Blackbird (formerly Bye Bye Blackbird) is the workings of San Francisco’s Mikey Sanders, and as soon as I got my hands on the Happy High EP, I instantly fell in love with the dreamy synth pop sound that fills these tracks. Since Blackbird Blackbird just got started in 2010, we can hope to see much in his future!
4. Gold Panda - Lucky Shiner
I originally heard about this UK artist when I stumbled upon his You EP which came out April of this year I was very intrigued with his grasp on sampling and sequencing. I made sure to jump on this album soon after its release. It is absolutely filled with dreamy instrumentation and mind blowing transitions. A release that is worth every penny!
3. Foals - Total Life Forever
This Oxford 5-Piece have gone and done it again, with another masterfully crafted full-length. The starting track, Blue Blood with its soft and slow vocal intro acts as the perfect introduction to what marks the bands best release yet. With a few slower, more intimate tracks as well as the always good foot tappers, this album shows just how great these musicians truly are.
2. Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
With one of the most interesting new sounds in music, its not surprising how successful the LA 5-piece were this year because of this phenomenal release. With some of the catchiest lyrical melodies as well as instrumentation, it was hard to not go back to this album. It is most definitely worth all of your time and money.
1. Annuals - Sweet Sister
This 6-piece band originally came to be in 2004 out of Raleigh, NC. Since then they have had multiple releases at different times in America and the UK, and this year released their Sweet Sister EP. This short 5 track album has a lot of sound packed into it. With the EP beginning with the catchy, powerful “Loxtep”, it send the listener on an adventure through many different instruments and mesmerizing lyrics. This group seems to be getting better and better with every release.
