2010 Takeback #3: Phosphorescent - Here’s to Taking it Easy
For the third 2010 takeback, we have Matthew Houck under the Phosphorescent title. His newest album Here’s to Taking it Easy came out mid last year, and since Matthew decided to add more intruments to the mix, it sounds awesome. It was an album that I played all summer at least. Check out the track “We’ll Be Here Soon”, since I couldn’t fit any of his other songs on here, and grab this great album from 2010 if you get the chance!
As a bonus, here’s one of the best tracks on the album “The Mermaid Parade”

I haven’t been one to follow Vancouver’s Dan Bejar’s project Destroyer very much, but I must say what I have heard of his newest album is golden. It almost has a dreamy, 80’s sound to it or something. Either way, this track is very groovy and should be enjoyed by everyone. “Kaputt” is set for a January 25th release.

UPDATE: The album was so popular that the band ran out of free album downloads off bandcamp, so they posted this mediafire link for anyone that wants the album:

For any fans of Local Natives, Fleet Foxes or Maps and Atlases, this stuff is right in your ballpark. Check out the song “Mexican Mavis” above.
Another artist that I heard come up a few times last year was South Florida’s Millionyoung. He did one of my favourite remixes of the year, as well as make a few groovy jams himself. He has just recently released his first full-length release entitled Replicants. Check out the track Perfect Eye’s from the album below, and click the name of the post to visit his website.
After a great year with last year’s “Four More Years EP”, Teen Daze made quite a name for himself. Blackbird Blackbird, also known as the workings of Mikey Sanders. After loving all of his releases in 2010, he has decided to keep the tunes coming in 2011. He recently sampled released a few tracks which may, or may not be a part of his next album. Either way, they take his sampling and creative style in a new direction, and it certainly works. Check out a demo for “Shes Got Everything” as well as a remix of Beach House’s Christmas release “I Do Not Care for the Winter Sun” below.
This Chicago 3-Piece having only formed in 2007 released their first self recorded album in 2009, and recieved much acclaim for their post rock, low fi pop sound. In late 2010, New York City’s Vampire Weekend went into Itunes and recorded a live session of some of their top songs. After loving their newest release Contra, and based on the bands musical history, it was obvious that this Itunes session would be great. For “Holiday”, they decided to slow down the track, and layer other instruments, one being the trumpet. Have a listen and download this great rendition of their own song below.
Philadelphia songwriter Kurt Vile is back in the studio working on a new album which is entitled “Smoke Ring for My Halo”, and is set for a March 8th release on Matador. For this weeks 2010 Takeback, after a week long trip to the Dominican Republic and enjoying the sun, this release seems a perfect fit. El Guincho is the workings of Barcelona’s Pablo Díaz-Reixa, who incorporates the elements of tropicalia, pop, and tops it with groovy Spanish-sung vocals. “Pop Negro” received much acclaim last year, and is still played on my Ipod at least once a week. The Salem, New Hampshire project Trap Them is back in the studio with producer Kurt Ballou, and will be releasing their newest LP Darker Handcraft on Prosthetic Records on March 15th. With the added efforts of ex-Coliseum drummer Chris Maggio, it will be another powerful release.
